Fused glass is an amalgamation of light, heat, glass and patience. and sometimes luck. It is very different from better known stained glass or blown glass. Fusing is a ancient technique of making unique artwork. The Egyptians first started fusing glass into core formed vessles some 5000 years ago. The Romans were master glass makers and produced some of the finest pieces in museums today. Fused glass has seen a resurgance in the past several decades and with today's techniques, incredible glass work is once more available. Some are functional, and some are purely artistic. And of course, some are both.
The process of making fused glass is several fold. First, fuse glass in a kiln at around 1550 degrees. This sets the pattern in the glass and may require several firings to get the desired effects. Once the glass is fused and annealed, it must be ground to the shape of slumping into a bowl shape. Secondly, to Slump glass, the glass is placed to a ceramic or metal mold and placed back in the kiln at around 1250 degrees. At this point, the piece may be complete or it can go back for further grinding and polishing.
